‘Still Life Portraits’ is a series that celebrates the incorporation of still life elements into portraiture.
I discovered I was using portraiture as a vehicle for experimenting with still life photography, a genre I never before visited. The more the work unfolded, the clearer it became that I was really interested in all subjects equally; the value and substance that the human subject and the inanimate subjects brought to the imagery were in “equal” visual standing. The portraits were no longer portraits of the individual before me, but were empirical studies of them. I enjoyed paring it down to the utmost basic qualities of light, form, value and color-- ingredients important in traditional art-making such as painting, installation and sculpture. Without exploiting my subjects as spiritless or emotionally void, they harmonize with the scenes I carefully construct around them in a slow and controlled fashion, resulting in what I call ‘Still Life Portraits’.
